Southeast Missouri State University Magill Hall Addition and Renovation

Southeast Missouri State University Magill Hall Addition and Renovation

The Clark Enersen Partners Science & Research Design Group was selected by Southeast Missouri State University to perform an in-depth study of two existing science buildings: Magill Hall and Rhodes Hall, located in the northern half of campus.  Magill Hall contains 69,575 GSF and currently houses science teaching and research laboratories, administrative offices, and general classroom space and houses the biology, chemistry, physics/engineering, and agriculture departments.  Rhodes Hall contains 48,544 GSF and currently houses science teaching and research laboratories, administrative offices, and general classroom space and currently houses the departments of biology, environmental science, chemistry, physics, and the advising center.

Through our in depth study, it was decided the best course of action for the budget was a complete renovation of Magill Hall in its entirety and a new addition to alleviate the shortage of overall space.  While improvements have been made to the building, many of the existing systems have outlived their useful life and now require replacement.  This includes the complete replacement of all of the mechanical and electrical systems within the building.  Exterior renovations include window replacement, masonry restoration, and roof replacement.  The exterior walls of the facility are currently un-insulated and are being furred out and insulated as part of this project; resulting in a significant reduction of operational costs for the facility.

In order to facilitate the renovation process and alleviate the shortage of overall space, the project also adds a contiguous addition to the north of Magill Hall.  The three-story addition will house a lecture room and mechanical and electrical space on the first floor.  The second floor will have two lecture rooms and a small conference area.  The third floor will be entirely devoted to mechanical space for housing the new air handling equipment and serves both the new addition and all of the spaces in Magill Hall.  When completed, the total square footage of the renovated Magill Hall and the new addition will be 85,110 GSF; yielding 49,252 NSF.  The estimated completion time for construction of this project is December 2013.

This project is funded in part through a Title III Grant which will assist in the renovation of biology classrooms and a National Science Foundation Grant with will assist in the renovation of chemistry research laboratory space.
