Johnson County, Sunset Drive Office Building Water Quality Laboratory

Johnson County, Sunset Drive Office Building Water Quality Laboratory

Clark & Enersen was hired to design a water quality laboratory on the first floor of the Sunset Drive Office Building. The process involved a hands-on design workshop where stakeholders ensured the project integrated user and building needs into a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory. The lab is a key component of County’s Wastewater Department and required several updates, including acid-resistant traps and piping and acid neutralization tanks at the sinks. Cold water lines, damaged flooring, and other components were also replaced.

The Sunset Drive facility was designed for maximum efficiency and holds the title of being Johnson County’s first LEED Gold Certified public building. Sustainability-related features include highly-insulated skin and highly-efficient heating and air conditioning systems. It’s estimated that the facility can operate with 40% lower energy costs, compared to a standard office building.

The building is adaptable as well, with moveable and changeable floor, wall, and ventilation systems. This makes it quicker, easier, and more cost-effective to make modifications to accommodate business growth and process changes. It is home to seven county administrative offices and serves as a sustainability education experience for the public.
