University of Missouri, Medical Science Building, Vivarium Renovation

Clark & Enersen was selected by the University of Missouri to renovate the Research Vivarium in the Medical Science Building. The state-of-the-art shared research/barrier facility located in the heart of main campus provides a mix of holding and procedure rooms as well as gnotobiotic, BSL-II spaces, and specialized research spaces.

During renovation, the existing facility was temporarily relocated so it could be taken offline. Additional procedure and holding room spaces were added and process flow was improved throughout the entire vivarium. All procedure rooms have O2, N, and CO2 piped from a central cylinder room. A gnotobiotic/germ-free suite was added to the vivarium to maintain the highest standards of isolation.

Other highlights of the renovation include:

  • New locker rooms with direct access to the vivarium.
  • Open office space with conference capabilities.
  • New generator to provide future emergency power capabilities to the entire building.
  • Updated building automation, chilled water, HVAC, and security systems.
  • Consolidated exhaust system that reduces the number of maintenance items.
  • Mechanical penthouse addition that places mechanical and electrical equipment above the vivarium, making it possible to pressurize each room individually from a central location.
